Each class brings together movement, music, singing, and traditional instruments. You will learn the physical practice alongside the cultural side of Capoeira Angola.
The physical level can be adapted to each student. You can build strength, balance, coordination, and confidence gradually, with guidance from the teacher.

About
Oxford Capoeira Society is a project developed in Oxford through Angoleiros do Mar (angoleirosdomar.com), an international Capoeira Angola group led by Mestre Marcelo Angola (Instagram). The group was founded on Itaparica Island, Bahia, and shares Capoeira Angola as a living practice of training, music, history, and community.
Our work in Oxford follows this lineage with respect for the roda, the teachers, and the roots of the art. Classes are open to students, professionals, local residents, families, and anyone curious to learn Capoeira Angola as a cultural, artistic, and educational practice.
Our values
We train Capoeira Angola with respect for its music, history, teachers, and roots. Classes are friendly, inclusive, and steady, helping each student grow through regular practice and connection.
We honour the roda, the music, the teachers, and the cultural roots of Capoeira Angola.
New students are guided at their own pace through movement, rhythm, singing, and instruments.
Regular training builds confidence, coordination, fitness, and a real sense of belonging.
Teacher
Mauricio Jiménez Mota has 16 years of Capoeira Angola experience under the guidance of Mestre Marcelo Angola, leader of Angoleiros do Mar and originally from Ilha de Itaparica, Bahia.
Cultural work in Oxford
Oxford Capoeira Society shares Capoeira Angola as movement, music, oral tradition, history, and collective play. Our classes, rodas, and workshops create a welcoming space for cultural learning across ages and backgrounds.
Through Angoleiros do Mar, our work is connected to a wider international community and to cultural and social projects in Brazil, including Gingando no Mar on Itaparica Island.
Workshops introduce rhythm, instruments, movement, history, and respectful participation.
Beginners, families, students, and local residents can take part at a steady pace.
Regular classes and rodas help people connect through shared practice and culture.
